Denise Vitollo

“I have a fascination with the movement and luminosity of water,” says Denise Vitollo, “and I can feel just at home under it as I can on land. The happiest moments of my childhood happened at our family cottage on the Susquehanna River in Northeastern Pennsylvania where I spent my summers exploring streams, catching crayfish, swimming, fishing, and rowing boats.”

Denise Vitollo’s most recent pastel works explore underwater worlds of fresh and salt water, and the peaceful, meditative, and graceful movements of creatures that are found there. An avid snorkeler, sailor, paddle boarder, and rower, she is obsessed with water and the active world beneath its surface.

When she is not painting life underwater, she paints plein air landscapes.

Denise is a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a Signature Member of The Philadelphia Water Color Society, The Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, The Maryland Pastel Society, and The Degas Pastel Society. She is also a member of The Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. In the past few years, she has been accepted to national and international juried shows at the Pastel Society of America (45th Enduring Brilliance Exhibition), The International Association of Pastel Societies’ Online Exhibition, The Philadelphia Water Color Society’s 118th and 119th International Works on Paper Shows, The Maryland Pastel Society’s Shades of Pastel biennial national show, Degas Pastel Society in New Orleans, The Connecticut Pastel Society’s Members Show and Renaissance in Pastel, The Pastel Society of North Carolina’s Pure Color Online Exhibition, and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod national juried exhibit For Pastels Only (Jack Richeson Award, 2019) and their Online Members Show . A participant in over two hundred group exhibits, she also has had eighteen one-woman shows.

In October 2017, the Pastel Journal notified Denise that her painting Hidden was awarded Fifth Place in the Pastel 100 Competition’s Animal and Wildlife Category. The April 2018 issue featured an image of the painting with a short article about her. Hidden was also chosen as the Jurors’ Fav 15% in the October 2016 Bold Brush Competition, and it was exhibited in The Degas Pastel Society’s Members Show. The Philadelphia Watercolor Society awarded her the Thornton Oakley Memorial Award during their 118th International Works on Paper Show for this piece.

In Chester County, PA, Denise participates in the annual Studio Tour as a host studio. In 2018, she was a juried artist with the Farm to Table Plein Air Group, and she received the Holbein Artist Materials Award at their culminating exhibition. She paints with LandArt Events and Plein Air Brandywine Valley.

Denise earned a Bachelor Of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking, a Master of Art Education Degree, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration. She has studied with many internationally known artists. Her successful teaching career spans all age levels, including graduate and undergraduate schools, adults, and high school.

I enjoy being on the PWCS Board because it allows me the opportunity to connect and work with outstanding watermedia artists. I am able to help make policies and decisions that will benefit all of us. As Workshop Coordinator, I get to know our nationally and internationally known workshop artists on a more personal level as we work through the details of their work with PWCS.
